UMBC Physical Education Philosophy

The Department of Physical Education at UMBC subscribes to the belief that participation in physical education can provide some of the most challenging and meaningful educational experiences in a student’s life. The department believes that course offerings should reflect the needs and interests of our diverse student population.

The development and improvement of skill levels, increased understanding and appreciation of the need for physical lifetime activities are the goals of this department. Participation in these activities also sets the stage for adoption of a healthy lifestyle at a young age and provides a foundation for optimal health in life after college.

The department believes that properly presented, physical education activities encourage the development of positive values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, confidence, and dedication with an efficiency that is difficult if not impossible to duplicate in other educational settings. Consequently, a student’s participation in physical education is considered to be a significant and integral part of the educational process at UMBC.
