Wushu

Wushu is a term used to encompass a variety of Chinese Martial Arts. The UMBC Wushu Club is a sports club founded with the sole idea of promoting Chinese Wushu in the collegiate environment. We currently offer Modern Taolu, Tai-Chi, and Wing Chun classes. If you have had any interest in martial arts via movies, demonstrations, choreography, etc., this club is for you. No prior experience is needed. We strive to equip each of our club members with the skills necessary to excel in competitive Wushu tournaments. All you need is warrior spirit!

Modern Taolu

Modern Taolu is a performance sport involving agility-based techniques and pre-choreographed routines. Our Taolu practices mainly focus on conditioning to improve flexibility, stamina, and agility, and learning relevant routines in the curriculum.

We use a variety of weapons including bo-staves, straight swords, and broadswords containing roots used by the military personnel from ancient China. These techniques possess applications in self defense, and although the weapons look realistic, they are not dangerous, especially in the hands of one who is trained.

Tai Chi

Tai-Chi is “an internal martial arts style with a focus on the natural body mechanics and energy flow, relaxation, and awareness and sensitivity.”

It’s great for improving your joint health, flexibility, and balance as well as being a great opportunity to de-stress after a long week.

Wing Chun

Wing Chun is an efficient, concept-based martial arts form focusing on close quarters self-defense. Our practices mainly involve conditioning and the practical application of Wing Chun techniques.
